What if I told you that having regular sessions of Thai Yoga Massage could significantly decrease the pain and stiffness associated with knee arthritis?

Knee osteoarthritis (knee OA) also known as Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) is one of the most common forms of knee pain. It stems from the wearing away of cartilage in the knee resulting in pain, swelling and stiffness of the joint.  Because of the swelling that is associated with knee OA, traditional treatment of this condition commonly includes taking anti-inflammatory drugs. Unfortunately, long term NSAID(non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) use can cause a number of adverse side effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding, nausea, vomiting, and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

In 2014, researchers compared Thai Yoga Massage (TYM), Thai Herbal Compression(THC), and Oral Ibuprofen (NSAID) for the overall pain relief of those suffering from knee OA. In this study, participants either received a one hour session of TYM or THC (three times weekly) or Ibuprofen (three times daily). After three weeks, knee OA sufferers in the TYM and THC groups had a greater decrease in pain and comparable changes in function (standing, walking, stair-climbing) over those in the Ibuprofen group. It was also shown that Ibuprofen use caused abdominal pain and nausea, while the TYM and THC had little to no negative side effects.

So what does this mean for you? It means that if you suffer from chronic knee pain caused by degenerative joint disease, regular sessions of Thai Yoga Massage will not only provide increased circulation and improved flexibility of joints and muscles, but it can give pain relief without adverse side effects.
